| | In
December 1996 and January
1997, we went on
a back-pack trip from Mexico City, around the Yucatan Peninsula, down into
Belize, across Southern Mexico, finally ending at a small town near Huatulco on
the West coast. On this trip we also stayed at Isla Mujeres, a tiny island just north of
Cancun. Cozumel is where we did some scuba diving. Most of the traveling
was done by taking local buses around the country. The buses were not like
the chicken and pig buses that we hear tales about. In fact, greyhound could
take a few lessons from the bus companies down in Mexico. | |
The trip started in Mexico City. From there we took the bus to
Veracruz on the Gulf of Mexico. From Veracruz we headed south east to Villa
Hermosa. From Villa Hermosa, it was up to Merida, a beautiful colonial town. Out
of Merida we visited the Ruins of Chichen Itza. Then we traveled east to Cancun.
A short time in Cancun convinced us that this was not a place we wanted to spend
any time, so we went by ferry boat to Isla Mujeres, and spent Christmas there. The
Mexicans really know how to throw a party. From Isla Mujeres we traveled south
through Playa del Carmen and Cozumel, until we reached Belize. Marilyn did some
more scuba diving there. Will could not go as he had a cold. From Belize we took a
bus across to the West coast, and found the area around Huatulco. It was so
beautiful that we decided to stay as long as we could, and caught a local flight
back to Mexico City, to connect with our flight back to Canada.
