One of our first trips together was a semi
backpack trip to Costa Rica. We purchased a return airline ticket and reserved
a hotel room for the first night of our stay. The rest of the trip was "wing
it". We ended up traveling Costa Rica from West to East, and from North to
almost South, by rental vehicle, bus, and with people we met who where also
traveling the country. We stayed in motels, inns, and bed and breakfasts. Over
all we had a very good trip, but did find that Costa Rica does not have a lot of
culture of its own. Rather, our impression was that it was a Latino country trying to emulate the
Americans. One of the reasons for this being that the country is protected by
jungle and mountains, and the early settlers did not penetrate it till many
years after the neighboring countries were settled. We did find some beautiful
beaches, lush jungle vegetation & exotic animals & birds as well as the
volcanoes.
